Juniper Ongoing Studies Program

2023

  • Welcome to Juniper's Ongoing Studies Program.

    GOALS

  • 1. Personal growth through learning and deepening one's understanding of Buddhist meditation, practice, and philosophy through the Juniper lineage; and

    2. A springboard for developing curriculum, teachers and discussion leaders to become part of Juniper’s educational system in the future.

    PARTICIPANTS

  • Individuals who wish to deepen their practice and studies through:

    1. Preparation for each session through reviewing session materials and developing responses to prompts about the topic.
    2. Attendance and participation at the bi-weekly sessions. This includes participating in discussion and, when ready, occasionally leading discussions and presenting content.
    3. A commitment to a personal meditation practice.

      FORMAT

    1. The program will be continuous, with time off for occasional breaks and holidays. To start, the group will meet on ZOOM on the first, third, and fifth Mondays of each month at 5:30-6:45 pm PST. Topics and assignments will be based on The Great Stages of the Path (Lam Rim) and related texts and commentaries and will draw upon modern philosophy and research for understanding and interpretation. Topics will include the nature and potential of the mind, the nature of reality, rebirth, suffering, meditation, balancing emotions, compassion, insight, relying on the teacher, preparation for deity yoga, and integrating dharma with modern knowledge and culture.

Lawrence Levy will lead the sessions. The program is included in Juniper's monthly membership fee.

    2. materials

    3. The program will use readings from multiple sources. Participants will be encouraged to explore commentaries and additional materials, traditional and modern, that they feel would be helpful to them and the group. Two books we strongly recommend and will be using throughout the program are The Middle-Length Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, Je Tsongkhapa and The Essence of the Vast and Profound, A Commentary on Je Tsongkhapa’s Middle-Length Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, Pabongka Rinpoche.

    • SPIRIT

    • Each person's participation in the program is highly valued and important. Our approach will be light, not heavy or dogmatic. We value experimentation, creativity, and fun -- a sense of humor is a plus!
If you would like to participate in the program or have questions, please get in touch with Lawrence at lawrence@juniperpath.org.
